Electric Air- and Ground-Source Heat Pumps: Versatile High Efficiency Heating Systems for Your Home

Heat pumps are a great solution for your home's comfort because they can heat and cool your home as well as control humidity. Technology has now allowed heat pumps to work efficiently in cold climates. 

Two of the most common types of heat pumps are air-source and ground-source heat pumps. 

Central Air-Source Heat Pumps

An ENERGY STAR certified ASHP provides highly efficient heating and cooling by extracting heat from outside into your home in winter and pulling the heat out of your home in the summer. For some, it may be helpful to think of a ducted ASHP as a central air conditioner that also works in reverse to provide whole-house space heating in winter.

When properly installed, an air-source heat pump can deliver one-and-a-half to three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes. This is possible because a heat pump moves heat rather than converting it from a fuel, like combustion heating systems do.

Mini-Split/Ductless Heat Pumps

If your home doesn’t have existing ductwork or you are planning an addition or renovation where running ductwork will be difficult, you can still install a
heat pump to heat and cool a portion of your house. Ductless mini-split heat pumps use an indoor unit connected to an outdoor unit via refrigerant lines.

  • Low carbon footprint: These systems use outside air to heat and cool your home. If you are switching from oil, you can significantly reduce your carbon emissions. ENERGY STAR certified models avoid more than 4,500 lbs of greenhouse gas emissions, on average, over the course of their lifespan compared to standard systems. 
  • Work in lower temperatures: Air-source heat pumps can extract heat from the air even in negative temperatures. Technology has improved and air-source heat pumps do work in cold climates
  • Long lifespan: with proper maintenance, these systems will last many years
  • Quieter than air conditioner window units

Geothermal Heat Pumps

Geothermal heat pumps (GHPs), sometimes referred to as GeoExchange, earth-coupled, ground-source, or water-source heat pumps, have been in use since the late 1940s. They use the constant temperature of the earth as the exchange medium instead of the outside air temperature.

As with any heat pump, geothermal and water-source heat pumps are able to heat, cool, and, if so equipped, supply the house with hot water. Some models of geothermal systems are available with two-speed compressors and variable fans for more comfort and energy savings.
