Protect Yourself from Utility Scams

We take customer security seriously. Your personal information — such as phone numbers, addresses, and emails — will never be shared without your permission. To stay safe, never provide or verify your utility account details, credit card information, Social Security number, or bank routing number to unknown callers, visitors or emails.

Common Scams Targeting Utility Customers

Type of Scam How It Works
Utility Bill Payment Scam

Beware of scammers claiming your utility bill can be paid by a third party — such as the Federal Reserve, a U.S. President, or a federal agency. These fraudsters provide unauthorized bank details and ask for personal financial information in exchange for the supposed payment.

These scams spread through word of mouth, the Internet, and even advertisements. Always use your own banking information — never one provided by someone else. Unauthorized use of banking details is illegal, and payments made this way will not be accepted. If you’re unsure, speak with a Customer Service Representative at (845) 452-2700 to verify accepted payment methods.

Fake Rebate Scam Scammers may pretend to be Central Hudson representatives, falsely claiming you’re eligible for a rebate check — then request personal information to process it. If contacted, do not share any details! Instead, hang up and call Central Hudson directly at (845) 452-2700 to verify.
Fake Customer Service Call

This scam uses a recording of Central Hudson’s automated phone system to trick customers into believing they’ve called us. The scam works like this:

  • Scammers call customers, falsely claim an overdue balance, and threaten service disconnection.
  • They provide a fake phone number to call and make payment.
  • When you call, the scam phone number plays a copied greeting from Central Hudson before connecting you to a fraudulent "representative" demanding payment.

Warning Sign: Scammers often demand payment via store-bought debit cards or money orders — a clear red flag. Central Hudson will never demand payment in unusual ways. If you receive a suspicious call, reach out to our customer service at (845) 452-2700 to confirm the legitimacy of the request.

Fraudulent Emails & Malware Threats

Fake emails may claim to be from Accounts@cenhud.com or another fraudulent address, tricking customers into opening malicious attachments. These emails may reference electronic billing and direct readers to open a file — which likely contains harmful software.

DO NOT open suspicious attachments. Central Hudson’s billing notifications never include attachments. If unsure, call us at (845) 452-2700 to verify the legitimacy of an email.

Imposters At Your Door

Some scammers pose as Central Hudson employees to collect fake utility bill payments in person or gain access to your home. They may request immediate cash, check, or credit card payments — or seek entry under false pretenses to commit theft.

Stay vigilant: If someone claiming to be from Central Hudson comes to your home, look for a marked company vehicle and ask for ID. If something feels off, call us at (845) 452-2700 before allowing entry or making payments.

Stay Safe & Spread the Word

Scams can target anyone, so share this information with family and friends. When in doubt, always contact Central Hudson directly.
