Electromagnetic Fields
Understanding Electromagnetic Fields
Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are all around us, though they are invisible to the human eye. They come from both natural sources, such as the earth’s magnetic field and thunderstorms, and man-made sources like household electricity, X-rays, and radio waves used for communication.
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) defines EMFs as invisible forces associated with the production, transmission, and use of electric power. These fields are generated by high-voltage transmission lines, secondary power lines, home wiring, and everyday appliances.
Public Concerns and Research
Many people have questions about the potential health effects of EMFs. Over the past 30 years, thousands of studies have been conducted, but no conclusive scientific evidence has proven a direct link between EMFs and health risks.
A study conducted by Carnegie Mellon University - Electric and Magnetic Fields from 60-Hertz Electric Power: What do we know about possible health risks? - provides additional insights on this topic.
Central Hudson’s Commitment
Central Hudson remains dedicated to providing safe and reliable electric service while keeping customers informed about EMFs. The company will continue to:
- Design and build transmission facilities in compliance with New York State EMF standards
- Support research into potential risks and management techniques for EMF exposure
- Explore practical ways to reduce EMF levels when possible
- Respond to customer requests for EMF measurements
Central Hudson also contributes to research conducted by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and monitors findings from ongoing studies. Additional EMF education and research can be found on the EPRI website.
