Carbon monoxide detector
Carbon monoxide: What to know to keep your home, family safe

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas that can accumulate indoors when fuel-burning appliances have blocked flues or when equipment such as generators or vehicles run in unventilated areas.

Tips to Stay Safe:

  • Install carbon monoxide detectors near fuel-burning appliances and bedrooms.
  • Never use generators in enclosed spaces, including basements or garages.
  • Keep chimneys and flues clear of debris; have them cleaned and inspected regularly.
  • Ensure proper airflow for appliances to function safely.
  • Avoid idling vehicles, snow blowers, or other fuel-burning equipment inside garages.
  • Never use grills or outdoor heating appliances indoors.

Family preparing for emergencies
National Preparedness Month:
Be ready when it matters most

At Central Hudson, preparation means maintaining our systems, training our workforce and promoting safe practices year-round so we're ready to respond when our communities need us most.

You can also prepare by:

  • Building or refreshing an emergency kit with essentials such as water, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries and medications.
  • Keeping mobile devices charged when severe weather is forecast
  • Having a plan for staying informed during outages, and make sure everyone in your household knows what to do in an emergency.

A little preparation today can make a big difference when unexpected events occur. Learn more on our Storm Preparedness Tips page.

Central Hudson vegetation management experts with reporter
In the news: How our innovative use of AI is improving reliability

A recent WAMC News story featured how Central Hudson is using artificial intelligence alongside the expertise of our forestry professionals to proactively identify areas of the electric system most vulnerable to tree-related outages. By combining advanced analytics with on-the-ground inspections, we can more precisely target vegetation management work, helping reduce outages and strengthen grid reliability as extreme weather becomes more frequent.

This innovative approach is already delivering results, contributing to a significant reduction in customer outages while helping us make smarter investments in system resilience.
