Proposed Hudson Valley Power Authority Takeover Could Raise Customer Bills Up to 36%
Recent discussions around a potential government takeover of Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. have raised questions about energy costs for our customers and the impact on the region. To provide clarity, the Protect Our Power Coalition conducted a cost estimate to understand what such a takeover would mean for customers. The analysis shows that a takeover could cost up to $12.2 billion, which would result in higher delivery bills up to 36%. A government takeover would impose significant financial risk, saddling residents with a debt that could take generations to repay.
It's important to emphasize: Central Hudson is not for sale. Our goal in sharing this information is to ensure customers understand the financial impact of a government takeover—not to suggest that such a sale is under consideration.
Central Hudson remains committed to keeping energy costs as low as possible for our customers. We continuously work to improve efficiency, invest in modern infrastructure, and deliver safe, reliable, and affordable service.
A regulated independent utility model is the best decision for the Hudson Valley community. This model ensures:
- Access to private capital for critical upgrades without burdening taxpayers.
- Regulatory oversight that protects customers and promotes accountability.
- Innovation and resilience, enabling us to meet clean energy goals while maintaining reliability.
Rather than pursuing costly and disruptive takeovers, we believe the focus should be on collaboration. We are committed to working closely with elected officials and lawmakers to find more ways to make energy affordable, reliable, and safe for all Hudson Valley residents.
“Our priority is delivering safe, reliable, and affordable energy to the communities we serve—not getting sidetracked by debates about a government takeover that divert attention and resources from our core mission,” said Stephanie Raymond, President and CEO of Central Hudson. “A government takeover would come at a staggering cost to customers and taxpayers, without delivering the benefits promised by the supporters. Maintaining our current utility model allows us to invest in modern infrastructure, innovate for a clean energy future, and keep costs as low as possible. We’re ready to work with lawmakers to find real solutions that make energy more affordable and sustainable for everyone.”
