Restoration Underway Following Damaging Storm

A fast moving, powerful line of thunderstorms moved through the region this afternoon, bringing strong winds and sustained lightning, and initially interrupting electric service to approximately 15,000 customers of Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation. More than 1,000 lightning strikes were reported as a result of the storms. The heaviest damage occurred in Ulster County, and as of now approximately 5,000 customers remain without service, the majority within the City of Kingston. Lightning is believed to be the cause of a transformer fire at an electrical substation in Kingston, and is being addressed by utility crews and  emergency responders. Central Hudson crews will be developing plans to re-route power to restore service to the city, expected to take place over the next several hours.

Staying in touch and keeping safe

Important safety measures include the following:

  • Stay at least 30 feet away from downed power lines, and remember that lines may be entangled and hidden in fallen trees. Assume all downed lines are live and report downed lines to Central Hudson or call 911.
  • Beware of fallen trees and limbs, and use caution or traveling;
  • Avoid the use of candles for illumination due to fire hazards;
  • Know how to open garage doors manually, if using a remote-control door opener.
  • Follow the manufacturer's safety instructions on the use of emergency generators, and be sure to shut off the main breaker when in use and operate the units outdoors;
  • Operate cars and motor vehicles outdoors only, and never inside the garage; and
  • Never use outdoor gas or charcoal grills indoors, as they pose a fire hazard and over time can give off deadly carbon monoxide gas.
