Central Hudson Employees Support, Promote Heart Health

Employees of Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. are raising funds and awareness for the prevention of heart disease and stroke by wearing red today in observance of the American Heart Association's National Wear Red Day. The observance also marks the start of American Heart Month, and in recognition Central Hudson is illuminating its Poughkeepsie headquarters building in red light through February.

"Our goal is to promote healthy choices and provide resources for advancing the prevention and treatment of heart disease and stroke by educating residents and raising funds in support of the American Heart Association," said Denise D. VanBuren, Vice President of Public Relations for Central Hudson. "That is why we support National Wear Red Day and have been the major sponsor of the Dutchess-Ulster BetterU Makeover Challenge for seven consecutive years, as these events endorse the benefits of a heart-healthy lifestyle."

"Heart disease and stroke cause one in three deaths among women each year, and cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States," said Erica Tyler, Director of Operational Technology at Central Hudson and chair of the energy company's National Wear Red Day observance. "We're encouraging our fellow employees to wear red today and support the mission of the American Heart Association." Tyler participated in the 2016-2017 BetterU Challenge, a 12-week program offered to participating women each year providing nutritional coaching, guided exercise, mentorship and more to improve their health and to serve as an inspiration to others. Applications for this year's BetterU Challenge will open in June 2018, and the program, sponsored by Central Hudson, will run in the fall.

Central Hudson employee-volunteers will also participate in the American Heart Association's Heart Walk, to be held this year at the Marist College campus on March 24. "This annual community event raises critical funds and awareness for care and the prevention of heart disease," said Pete Harpolis, Manager of Operations Services at Central Hudson, board member for the Mid-Hudson Valley chapter of the American Heart Association and Central Hudson's Heart Walk team leader. "Our employees have continuously been a part of the Heart Walk, and we encourage everyone to rise to the challenge and support this year's event by participating or donating to this worthy cause."
