Central Hudson Earns 2018 ENERGY STAR® Award for Excellence

Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation was selected as a recipient of the 2018 ENERGY STAR® Award for Excellence for its outstanding efforts to offer lower cost LED lighting, including no-cost LED bulbs to its low income customers, and leveraging Energy Star resources. Central Hudson accomplishments were recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on April 20, 2018.

“We’re proud of this recognition, and pleased to have offered these effective programs that help our customers save energy, lower their energy costs and protect the environment,” said Michael L. Mosher, President and C.E.O. of Central Hudson. “Adoption of new, energy efficient technologies help move us forward in reducing costs and lowering emissions.”

Central Hudson received the ENERGY STAR® recognition for its effective engagement in the ENERGY STAR Light the Moment promotion and its community-based educational efforts.

Key accomplishments in 2017 include:

  • Promoting ENERGY STAR certified light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, including discounted lighting products at 31 Mid-Hudson Valley retail locations and on-line marketplaces, resulting in customer purchases of nearly 425,000 discounted ENERGY STAR certified LED bulbs, which together reduces energy use by more than 17,000 megawatt hours (MWh), or the equivalent of powering more than 2,300 homes;
  • Engaging limited-income customers in partnership with local United Way chapters, and distributing more than 20,000 ENERGY STAR certified LED bulbs to more than 4,000 customers; and
  • Organizing numerous in-store educational events in Mid-Hudson Valley retail locations, promoting ENERGY STAR certified lighting and the “Light the Moment with Central Hudson” contest to thousands of consumers. In-store lighting events promote the benefits of LED lighting, educate consumers of how to buy LED lights and inform customers of special pricing available at participating stores.

“The 2018 ENERGY STAR award winners have demonstrated real leadership, showing how American families and businesses can save energy, save money, and reduce air emissions,” said Bill Wehrum, EPA Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation.

In 2016 alone, ENERGY STAR certified products, homes, buildings, and plants helped Americans save over $30 billion in energy costs and approximately 400 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity and while achieving broad emissions reductions.
