Central Hudson and Employees Support Local Community Organizations

Utility and employees contribute more than $730,000 in 2017

More than $730,000 was provided to local not-for-profit agencies and small business organizations by Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation and its employees during 2017, with more than $7 million in such contributions provided during the last 10 years. In addition, employees volunteered thousands of hours in support of agencies by raising funds, serving in leadership roles and fulfilling organizational missions.

“We are dedicated to the Mid-Hudson Valley, with a strong tradition of community service,” said Denise D. VanBuren, Vice President of Public Relations.  “Our employees are committed volunteers who selflessly donate their time and talents as well as offering personal contributions to programs that serve neighbors in need.”

VanBuren explained the many ways in which financial support is offered by Central Hudson and its employees. Individual employee contributions to community agencies are matched by Central Hudson’s Employee Matching Gift program, which totaled more than $75,000 in 2017. “This program allows Central Hudson to support organizations with which our employees are involved and to spread our contributions throughout the communities we serve,” said VanBuren. Central Hudson will match employee gifts made to eligible 501(c)(3) organizations that provide services within the utility’s eight-county service territory of up to $500 per employee annually.

During the year, employees also raise funds for a variety of organizations through Casual for a Cause, generally held once per month on Fridays, allowing casual attire in return for a donation to a service agency sponsored by an employee. During 2017, employees raised more than $3,300 for seven agencies.

Employee contributions to the Community Fund of the United Way during the annual campaign are also matched. In 2017, nearly $340,000 in employee contributions and matching shareholder funds was raised in support of local agencies and programs.

During the year Central Hudson matched $50,000 in customer contributions to the Good Neighbor Fund, a last-resort grant toward utility bills for families and individuals facing financial hardship though a program administered by the local corps of the Salvation Army.

Central Hudson also extended more than $250,000 to local agencies and business groups by sponsorship of community events that raise awareness, promote the local economy and support non-profit programs. Central Hudson also joined parent company Fortis Inc. and other Fortis subsidiaries during the year to donate a combined $100,000 to the American Red Cross in support of residents and communities afflicted by hurricanes this year, with a $10,000 contribution by Central Hudson to the local Hudson Valley chapter.

“Equally as valuable as their financial contributions, our employees volunteer many thousands of hours each year to local organizations,” said VanBuren. “We recognize annually five employees who by example exemplify the spirit of volunteerism and provide the organizations they serve with a $500 contribution through our annual Community Service Award,” she said. Since 1989, 140 employees and organizations have received the Award, and nearly $70,000 in total contributions has been donated to the recognized organizations.

Employees also volunteer and support many other causes, including holiday food and toy drives, fundraising walks, neighborhood cleanups, home and building repairs for needy families and community agencies, and more. “We’re proud of our employees’ dedication to the communities we serve and their willingness to support those in need,” said VanBuren.
