Central Hudson’s Almanac to Air for Last Time

The final installment of Almanac, Central Hudson’s long-time radio program, will air on April 15.

“Almanac has continuously aired on local radio stations for nearly 60 years, and we’re proud of this long-standing tradition -- but times have changed,” said Denise D. VanBuren, Vice President of Public Relations.

We will still be on the radio to promote our many messages about safety, energy efficiency, assistance programs and more, but we will also be taking full advantage of other communication opportunities available in this digital age.”

The five-minute program offered listeners facts and stories about the natural world, with insights on the weather, wildlife, astronomy, earth sciences and more.  “We appreciate all of the faithful listeners and our partner stations who supported Almanac through the years,” said VanBuren. “Many local residents tell us that they grew up listening to the program each morning.”

Almanac first aired on October 5, 1959, beginning as a “weather” show broadcast by six radio stations in the region. Over the years, Almanac attracted more listeners, growing to 10 stations in the 1960s and to 20 AM and FM stations today. Hosts have included John Kuhn and Tony Megargee. The program’s most recent host, Central Hudson’s Director of Corporate Communications Paul Tesoro, has hosted Almanac since April 6, 1987, and is retiring this month.

“Almanac celebrated nature and the Hudson River Valley,” said VanBuren. “It was a great expression of our devotion to the Valley and its natural beauty – which will never change, but we’re excited about new opportunities and ways to express commitment to our region.”
