Adjusting home temperature
Summer & winter temperatures often increase energy usage & costs, but we can help you save

When temperatures soar in summer, or plunge in winter, your home's heating and cooling systems work overtime. Heating and cooling systems typically require more energy than anything else in your home. So these temperature extremes can cause spikes in your energy consumption, resulting in higher seasonal energy costs.

Spring provides the perfect opportunity to boost energy efficiency before the summer heat arrives, ensuring your home stays comfortable and energy costs affordable. This page on our website offers valuable tips and resources to help you make smart changes and better understand why your energy bills may fluctuate from month to month.

Thunderstorm
Be prepared for summer storms

While summer brings many sunny, beautiful days, higher temperatures and increased moisture in the atmosphere make severe storms a more frequent threat. Destructive summer storms can strike with little warning or time for you to react. Here are five suggestions to help you stay safe and informed:

  1. Sign up for Text Message Alerts:
Enroll in our text messaging service so we can alert you about outages and send restoration estimates.
  2. Stock up on essentials:
Have flashlights, batteries, medications, water and non-perishable food on hand. Be sure your cell phone is fully charged, too, especially when a severe storm is expected.
  3. Avoid & report fallen wires:
You can't tell if a fallen wire is energized by looking at it. If you ever encounter a fallen wire, stay at least 30 feet away and keep others away, too. Never drive over fallen wires. Call 911 to report fallen wires. Central Hudson will dispatch crews to make repairs.
  4. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram & X:
We utilize social media to warn customers about severe weather predictions and post important updates on these platforms during major storms.
  5. Have an emergency plan:
Include things like: where your family will meet in case of sudden emergencies; who will assist elderly relatives; and how to maintain access to important information and documents. The American Red Cross has tips and templates here to help create your plan.

Central Hudson honored for aiding Hurricane Helene restoration effort

Earlier this year, Central Hudson received the Edison Electric Institute's Emergency Assistance Award for efforts aiding in Hurricane Helene recovery. In October 2024, Central Hudson sent a 30-person contingent to help Georgia Power with their restoration work after Hurricane Helene caused devastating floods and left millions throughout the southeast without power.

The Emergency Response Awards recognize recovery and assistance efforts of electric companies following extreme weather events and natural disasters. This is the ninth Emergency recognition Central Hudson has received, both for local emergency response and for providing mutual assistance in other parts of the country.

The students explained to Central Hudson experts in these energy systems how their prototypes generate electricity and what they’ve learned throughout the school year. Central Hudson has had the pleasure of partnering with the school district on a variety of energy related projects each of the last four years.

Central Hudson & customers embrace clean energy together

Central Hudson and our customers are joining forces to embrace new technologies and sustainable solutions that will ensure a brighter, greener future. The results are impressive. Some things to celebrate that we've accomplished together include:

CLEAN HEAT
Central Hudson customers have installed more than 22,000 heat pump systems and more than 2,200 heat pump water heaters with the help of our Clean Heat incentives. We’re also developing a new Community Geothermal program.

SOLAR
More than 16,000 customers have enrolled in our Community Solar options and our region leads NYS in the rate of solar energy adoption. To support this growth, we’re modernizing our infrastructure, deploying advanced technologies to boost efficiency, support battery storage, and seamlessly integrate distributed energy resources into the grid.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Since 2020, Central Hudson has distributed $97.3 million in energy efficiency and beneficial electrification incentives to customers with 51% of those benefits reaching disadvantaged communities. Visit the Save Energy & Money page on our website to learn about available incentives and more.

HYDRO
For the last century, Central Hudson has operated three hydroelectric power plants that are still going strong. Although utilities in New York were generally required to sell all power generation assets at the turn of the century, Central Hudson successfully petitioned to continue operating these plants that still provide a slice of reliable, renewable energy to our region.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES
Central Hudson is helping local municipalities and businesses install charging stations to support the growing use of electric vehicles. Visit the Electric Vehicle section of our website to discover incentives and learn more about driving electric.
