Bringing Glogal Flavors to Your Table: The Story of Cafe Spice

Cafe Spice Label What started as a love for authentic Indian flavors has grown into a thriving business bringing ready-to-eat global cuisine to grocery stores nationwide. With 150 employees and a well-established 50,000-square-foot facility in New Windsor, NY, Cafe Spice has expanded its operations to meet growing demand. Their 70,000-square-foot facility in Beacon, made possible in part by a $200,000 economic development grant from Central Hudson, is equipped with cutting-edge food processing technology. This technology includes advanced batch cooking, spiral chillers for improved shelf life, and increased automation, which allows Cafe Spice to ramp up production while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.

A Flavorful Journey

The story of Cafe Spice dates to 1976, when Sushil Malhotra started a spice importing business in New York City. Seeing a growing appetite for Indian cuisine, his family opened their first bistro near New York University in 1998, introducing New Yorkers to bold, aromatic flavors. In 2000, father and son duo Sushil and Sameer Malhotra officially founded Cafe Spice, turning their passion into a mission: making high-quality, authentic global meals easily accessible.

By 2003, their reputation caught the attention of Whole Foods, leading to an exciting partnership. Cafe Spice supplied hot bar meals for Whole Foods' Columbus Circle location, inspiring them to shift focus from restaurants to ready-to-eat meals available at retailers across the country. Today, their meals, including favorites like tikka masala and chana masala, are stocked in Hudson Valley grocery stores such as Adams Fairacre Farms, Tops Markets, Price Chopper, and many more.
