Back-up generators require proper, professional installation. For safety, never plug a generator into any electric outlet in your home. A wrong connection could feed electricity back through the lines and endanger the lives of our repair crews. Check local ordinances to see if you need a special permit and inspection.
Follow these safety tips when using a portable home generator:
- Read all manufacturer’s instructions.
- Follow instructions on properly “grounding” the generator.
- Don’t exceed the manufacturer’s rating for total electric load.

- Turn the generator off to refuel, and store fuel in a properly designed container.
- Use only UL-listed, three-prong extension cords.
- Keep cords out of the way, and don’t run them under rugs or carpets.
Don't try to heat your home with an unvented heater, gas range or any similar appliance, and never use a charcoal grill indoors. Carbon monoxide could be produced. To lessen the risk of damage, turn off or disconnect any appliances that would go on automatically when power is restored, like refrigerators, freezers and water pumps. Be especially sure that heat-producing electric stoves, toaster ovens, irons or hair curlers are off or disconnected – fires could result if these items are on and operating when the power comes back on.
Also unplug sensitive equipment such as fax machines, microwaves, computers
and televisions. Surge protectors prevent damage to your appliances and office equipment.
Store the following supplies for easy access in case of a power outage:
- Flashlight and fresh batteries
- Battery-operated radio
- Telephone that doesn’t require electricity
(cordless phones require electricity, cell phones do not)
- Ready-to-eat food and water
(bottled water, packaged snacks, fruits)
- Battery-operated clock
- First aid kit
