Energy Seminars Will Offer Tips, Professional Help

Free sessions to help residents and businesses save energy this winter

With high costs projected for heating fuels this winter, residents and businesses are seeking ways to reduce their energy use. The Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. and Mid-Hudson Energy Smart Communities have teamed up to provide information on how to save energy in a series of four seminars, to be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the following locations:

October 2: J.C. Penny Corridor,
Hudson Valley Mall,
1300 Ulster Ave, Kingston
October 7:     Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel, 40 Civic Center Plaza, Poughkeepsie
(free parking at the parking deck adjacent to the hotel & Civic Center)
October 22: Fishkill Town Hall, 807 Route 52, Fishkill
November 6:  Newburgh Free Library, 124 Grand Street, Newburgh

“These free seminars are being held to show residents and businesses the steps they can take to lower their energy use and save money this winter,” said Denise D. VanBuren, Vice President of Public Affairs and Energy Efficiency for Central Hudson.

“We’ll have the latest on programs offered by New York State to help lower energy bills,” said Patrice Courtney Strong of Mid-Hudson Energy Smart Communities.

“There will also be information on how residents can finance energy efficiency upgrades,” said Stephen M. Nikitas, Vice President of Marketing for Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union.

“Given the record high price of home heating fuel, far too many New Yorkers will have to choose between heating their homes throughout the long months of ice and snow and bitter cold that are coming and feeding their families. We cannot wait until the crisis is upon us before we act,” said Assemblymember Kevin Cahill (D – Ulster, Dutchess) and Chair of the Assembly Committee on Energy, who will be speaking at the Kingston seminar on October 2.

“Increased oil costs are already causing people to shiver as they try and figure out how they will pay to heat their homes this winter,” said Congressman John Hall, who will be speaking at the October 22 seminar in Fishkill. “With so many families struggling this winter, seminars explaining how to save money on this basic necessity are a very helpful service.”

Attendees will:

  • Hear energy saving ideas, and get advice on equipment and appliances;
  • Meet home performance professionals who can help you save money this winter;
  • Learn financing options for energy efficiency measures.

Informational booths from private and public organizations will also be available to provide helpful tips on programs and services available to residents this winter.
