Central Hudson Conducts Electric Improvement Projects in Spackenkill Area

Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation is investing nearly $10 million in new electrical facilities to improve service reliability and ensure adequate supplies of power in portions of the Town and City of Poughkeepsie and the Town of LaGrange. In the coming year, two different projects will improve service to approximately 8,000 homes and businesses.

“We’re making this significant investment to keep pace with development and to improve the reliability of electric service,” said James P. Laurito, President of Central Hudson. “These needed improvements will bolster the local electric system in this area, which is at or near capacity due to growth in electricity use over the years, and provide better system redundancy to enhance the quality of service.”

The work will take place now through the end of the year:

  • In the first project, site work has already begun for the construction of a new electric substation to be placed along an existing utility easement that crosses Spackenkill Road, scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. Shrubs and native plantings will be placed around the substation to help screen its appearance, and a lower-capacity existing substation on the opposite side of Spackenkill Road will be removed next year.

  • In the other project, distribution line improvements on Spackenkill Road, Millbank Road, Cedar Avenue, Pine Tree Drive and Red Oaks Mill Road are being made. As part of this upgrade, distribution poles and lines will be upgraded and replaced, and new distribution lines will be placed on the south side of Spackenkill Road along certain sections.

Improvement activities will be limited primarily to weekdays. Central Hudson crews follow safe work practices and will utilize measures to control traffic from time to time, although disruptions are expected to be minimal.

“We appreciate our customers’ patience as we invest in new facilities to better serve the needs of the community,” said Laurito.
