Electric Use Record Set By Central Hudson Customers
A combination of heat and humidity increased the use of electricity by customers of Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp., who set a new all time peak-use of 1,144 megawatts (MW) between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19. The previous record of 1,143 MW was set on June 13, 2005. Tuesday’s 24-hour usage of electricity, when 22,316 megawatt-hours were delivered, also surpassed the 24-hour record set on July 3, 2002, of 22,249 megawatt-hours. “Electric use increases on hot and humid days as homes and businesses rely on air conditioning to keep cool,” said Carl E. Meyer, President and Chief Operating Officer of Central Hudson. “This new record is an indication of the continued growth in the region, and is also a reflection of the gradual increase in average electric use among households in the Mid-Hudson Valley,” he said. The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), which oversees the state’s electric grid, indicated that despite the record use of electricity, supplies were adequate on Tuesday to meet demand. The NYISO also reported a new all time peak-use of electricity in New York State on Tuesday, when 31,741 MW were used. The previous record of 30,982 MW was set on August 9, 2001. “This is the second electric use record set by Central Hudson customers this year,” Meyer noted. “As we may see continued heat and humidity this summer, residents are reminded to conserve energy whenever possible, especially during the hottest days, by turning off lights, appliances, televisions, computers and other electric devices when not in use. Keeping conservation in mind will help the statewide electric system provide energy when demands are at their highest, and will help our customers manage their energy bills,” he said.
