Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation has been awarded the 2011 Richard K. Wager Workplace Inclusiveness Award by the Poughkeepsie Journal in recognition of its diverse workforce. The utility was presented with the award at the 20th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast held by the Catherine Street Community Center at the Mid Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie on Jan. 21.

The award, in its 12th year, “recognizes progress toward diversity in an employer’s workforce,” according to the Poughkeepsie Journal. Central Hudson received the award for one of two categories, organizations with more than 100 employees. Nominations were reviewed by a panel of community leaders and Poughkeepsie Journal staff.

“We are truly honored by this recognition and award, as Central Hudson is dedicated to providing equal employment opportunities to every individual,” said Steven V. Lant, Chairman of the Board and CEO. “Central Hudson employees at all levels are committed to our diversity initiatives in order to improve the quality of our workforce and better serve our customers.”

Poughkeepsie Journal publisher Barry Rothfeld said, “Companies that have been recognized have learned the important lesson that a diverse workplace is not only the right thing to do, but a sound business practice.”

During the awards ceremony, Lant presented the Catherine Street Community Center with a contribution of $854, representing one dollar for each Central Hudson employee, to help further the Center’s mission of community service.
